Instructor: Mr. Jim Hathaway (http://www.brushink.com)

Mr. Hathaway studied drawing and painting at the State University of New York, Brooklyn College, and The Art Student's League of New York. He came to Japan in 1989 and studied ink painting. He lives, paints, and teaches in Tokyo. You may have seen him on Japanese TV, or read his essays in a magazine or in his book, Shitamachi Gaijin.

講師： アメリカ人墨絵画家　ジム・ハサウェイ先生 (http://www.brushink.com)
ニューヨーク州立大学ブルックリン校等で絵画を学んだ後、１９８９年に来日し、墨絵と出合う。東京下町在住で、東京を舞台に画家活動を続ける中、教鞭も取 る。テレビ出演、雑誌へのエッセイ投稿、マスコミからの取材も多数。著書に「下町の外人さん」がある。

Message to the students from  
Mr. Hathaway:

Learning to use a brush is not only for artists. Japanese have known this for a thousand years. Right brain - Left brain, learning to coodinate head and heart, hand and eye -l earning the secrets of visual thinking, can help you in anything you wish to do in life.
Japanese ink, brush, and washi paper are most senseitive materials ever developed for an artist. Learning to master them can take some practice. It really is a new world of expression. This class will start at the beginning. One thing will lead the next.

　「筆が画家だけのものではないことは、日本ではずっと昔から知られていることで す。筆の使い方を学ぶということは、右脳と左脳、頭と心、手と目を呼応させるという、視覚的思考法の秘訣を学ぶことでもあり、この秘訣を人生の諸場面で応 用することで、色々なことができるようになると思います。
　日本の墨、筆、それに和紙は、どれも至極繊細にできているため、描く者は神経を集中させることが求められるものです。これらを使いこなせるようになるの には、練習が要りますが、一つ一つ積み上げながら、新しい表現の世界を体験する、そのお手伝いができたらと思います。」
 Fees: All the prices include consumption tax.

•　Registration Fee: 5,250 yen/person (only once at the beginning of the enrollment)

•　Tuition Fee: 39,900 yen/person (1 lesson = 3,800 yen + tax)

•　Material Expense *: Approximately 3,000 yen/person (only once at the beginning of the enrollment)

* This includes brushes, 'suzuri' (inkstone), 'shitajiki' (felt underpad), dishes, 'bunchin' (paperweight), and papers. If you already have these or would like to purchase by yourself, you don't need to pay for them.

Application Deadline: September 20 (You will be able to join the course if there is vacancy, even after the course has started.)

Payment: Payment should be made through bank transfer no later than September 24. Once the payment has been made, the fee will not be refunded. However, if you know before the payment deadline that you will miss some lessons, please consult.

Other: We will hold an annual exhibition every December to share with the public the world of sumie created by our students. The exhibitions in 2008 and 2009 can be watched on the following youtube video:

＊道具代には、筆、硯、下敷き、小皿、文鎮、紙が含まれます。既にお持ちの方や御自身で購入されたい方は、この道具代をお支払いになる必要はありません。

＊但し、コース開始後も人数的に問題ない場合は、御参加いただけます。

お支払い方法： ９月２４日（金）までに銀行振り込みにてお支払いください。一度お支払いい ただいた料金は、返金致し兼ねますが、お支払い期限までに出られない日程が既におわか りの場合は、別途御相談ください。
